And if it was at a major corporation, it would be the one machine that everyone has to use to do something basic, because they’re afraid to upgrade it.
For example, a Fortune 50 (that’s not even a typo, it’s top 50) company that my dad works with was still running Internet Explorer SEVEN on all PCs as of a year ago. They finally upgraded to IE8, but can’t go any higher because they run freaking XP still.

That can't be secure...

Actually, that’s one of the major reasons they’re so out of date. The security is locked down more than the U.S. military (literally, his company has also worked with the National Guard and it was less secure), so it’s more unsafe to update with a new OS and browser.

There are two boxes at one of my datacenters from 2001. Still in production use. I may even be the only person in the company who could get it back up if it ever went down.
Also, lets not forget the ancient laptop McLaren keeps on hand for the F1. Sometimes its beyond security as to why some machines stay in use. Sometimes the systems literally cannot be updated.
I tried to update an NT4 machine to 2000 to see if I could get flash drives to work. The computer controlled a lithium ion battery tester, and replacing the tester would have been a six figure cost. A few hundred dollars here and there wasnt so bad in comparison, but I could never get the machine to complete the update successfully.
I get that its hard to keep up with technology sometimes, but there are certain industries that should be required to overhaul infrastructure every couple of years. Just my opinion though...

that’s pretty similar to the first PC i had in college. Had been a mac user through high school. got to college, couldn’t do anything with the mac. this was the early days of the internet, right after al gore invented it. Had to sell it and get a PC. got a gateway 2000 (before they dropped the 2000) pentium, something like 100mhz i think, massive 250mb hard drive, windows 95. my roomate and his 486 were jealous.
